The ostensory belonged to the rich liturgical kit of the Cathedral of Nicastro. It was ordered by Monsignor Carlo Pellegrini, head of the diocese from 1797 to 1809. The work belongs to a sun shrine supported by a figurative node. It is considered precious both for its manufacture and its deep thought meaning. The aim of the work is not only to keep the consecrated host but also to stress the adoration; so the holy sacrament is supported by the blind faith and next to the Holy Mary there is a putter that holds the cross. The faith mystery is seen as the proclamation of death by sacrifice and the announcement of the resurrection by the holy light. Other two symbols of this work are the christian virtue and the charity mother of the weak and the hope symbol of liberation. The all-round figures which rise from the decoration and the structure are the foreground parts which stress the theological meaning. The simple linear base loses its previous baroque elements but the main figures which are the simple of the baroque cage remain emphasized. This work is the result of a skilled gold workshop that brings together the design and the knowledge of figurative arts. In the sculptures there are signs of baroque artists. The placement of the precious golden and silver parts produces a sparkle effect. The style of the work shows the transition between two historical ages: the luxurious baroque figures and the simple neo-classic the base. |
